Job Summary

The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting to fill two vacancies for Educational Interpreter - Deaf and Hard of Hearing to serve students within the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education and South County SELPA within the Student Services and Programs Division. Under direction of special education administrative staff, the Educational Interpreter provides communication facilitation between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, and others, in an educational setting and for other school-related activities, including extracurricular activities, as designated in a student's Individualized Educational Program (IEP).


* ID 2351 - South County SELPA, Chula Vista, 180 days, 6 hours per day
* ID 2691 - NCCSE, San Marcos, 183 days, 6 hours per day

Requirements / Qualifications

This position requires one of the following certifications:

National certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); or,
Achieved a score of 4.0 or above on one (1) of the following:
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA); or,
  • Educational Sign Skills Evaluation - Interpreter and Receptive (ESSE-I/R); or,
  • National Association of the Deaf/American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (NAD/ACCI) Assessment

This position requires possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent) and at least one year of experience (paid or volunteer) working with youth in an organized setting, ideally with at-risk youth.

Candidates must also demonstrate Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, previously referred to as the NCLB Act) compliance. In order to satisfy the paraprofessional requirements of the ESSA, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND,
  • Completed at least 48-semester units at an accredited college or university; OR ,
  • Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; OR ,
  • Successful completion of an assessment, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills, and the ability to assist with instruction.
