Job Summary

The Lead Teacher (LT) is responsible for the overall coordination of educational services for youth. Lead Teacher ensures that all unaccompanied children UC receive educational assessments and a structured education per the Office of Refugees Resettlement (ORR). The Lead Teacher conducts an educational assessment of each UAC in order to determine the academic level of the child and develops a curriculum based on needs. The Lead Teacher will be responsible for maintaining a positive and appropriate educational environment and creating a program that meets the intellectual and emotional needs of all the children.

Essential Functions:

  1. Responsible for general oversight and coordination of educational services and staff.
  2. Responsible for curriculum development which facilitates instruction appropriate for students with a variety of academic competencies, backgrounds, skills, and learning needs.
  3. Ensure quality control and uniformity of curriculum development, lesson plan and assessment.
  4. Assist with the coordination of PE, ESL and Vocational Courses instruction with Shift leads, and/or Program Director.
  5. Adapt or modify local educational standards to develop curricula and assessments, in basic academic areas (Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, Physical Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL), if applicable).
  6. Assist with the planning and coordination of special educational events to include but not limited to spelling bee, science fair, olympics, acculturation activities, among others.
  7. Support on development of Individualize Lesson plans to meet each student academic level.
  8. Develop Individualized Educational Plans to report and document student’s developmental progress (cognitive, emotional, social, and physical).
  9. Development of the Educational Domain Service Plan submitted initially at 21 days and 30 days thereafter as required by funding source.
  10. Ensure the initial Academic Diagnostic Assessment is administered to youth within 72 hours upon arrival and within 45 days from the date of the initial assessment.
  11. Ensure compliance of class group size and teacher to client ratio at all times. Establish routines with smooth transition periods.
  12. Design appropriate room arrangements to support program goals.
  13. Maintain classroom inventory and place purchase request for equipment, supplies and classroom materials, may include textbooks, furniture, and other equipment needed to assist in the provision of instruction, in accordance with classroom budget.
  14. Assess youth’s needs and developmental progress on an on‐going basis.
  15. Conduct classroom team in formal observations and assessments.
  16. Respond to behavioral signals from youth that indicate a need for a change in teaching style to meet the child's emotional or intellectual development needs.
  17. Ensure adherence to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) policies and procedures.
  18. Provide educational services based on the individual academic development, literacy level, and linguistic ability of each unaccompanied child.
  19. Evaluate and track the progress of the department.
  20. Responsible for department meetings or curriculum planning.
  21. Develop weekly lesson plans, activities, and class set-ups.
  22. Provide guidance to staff on communicating with youth on their developmental or addressing issues when necessary.

Other Functions:

  1. Develop corrective action plans or disciplinary memos to address performance issues of case management staff in collaboration with Program Management Team and HR Department.
  2. Provide adaptive leadership through supportive coaching and mentoring to case management and supervisory staff to inspire and encourage our workforce and promote integrity.
  3. Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive climate of learning and excellence where students have the opportunity to enhance their developmental growth.
  4. Responsible for ensuring that the teaching assistants maintain consistent communication with program personnel to promote the positive adjustment of the youth to the program.
  5. Support the professional growth of colleagues by sharing materials and information and providing helpful feedback and encouragement.
  6. Responsible for working collaboratively with program administrators to ensure that the collaborative process between the unit supervisors, teachers, case managers and clinical staff occurs on a consistent and on-going basis to ensure that unit programming is developed, implemented, and maintained.
  7. Provides effective communication across departments and programs to ensure consistency of expectations, as well as works effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  8. Provide training for teacher assistants regarding responsibilities within the Children First Residential Care Program, including agency, state and federal policy updates and changes.
  9. Ensure accurate and timely completion of documentation as required by state and federal regulations, state and company.
  10. Involved in interviewing and orientation new employees for the department.
  11. Assist ensuring program operations and activities adhere to federal, state and company legal guidelines and internal policies.
  12. Discover ways to enhance efficiency and productivity of procedures.
  13. Attend all organizational required trainings.
  14. Attend all departmental and program meetings to ensure that up-to-date information is received and/or provided and to ensure that changes to policy or practice are implemented and adhered to.
  15. Keep management informed with detailed and accurate reports or presentations.
  16. Assist in the evacuation of youth as needed due to inclement weather conditions, natural disasters, or other unforeseen occurrences.
  17. Maintain a safe, clean, and hazard-free work area.
  18. Ensure the proper supervision of youth at all times.
  19. Other task and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Level: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Spanish or English, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or other relevant behavioral science.
  • ESL (English as a Second Language) certifications required.
  • 2 years of experience in relevant field.
  • 2 years of experience is a supervisory role.
  • 2 years of experience in teaching capacity and lesson planning.
  • Previous experience of instructional Design and Curriculum Development.
  • Classroom teaching experience in an accredited early childhood facility.
  • Licensed in the state of service is preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) - required.

Equivalent Education/Work Experience:

Bachelor’s degree AND 2 years of progressive employment experience with demonstrated supervisory AND 2 years of experience in teaching capacity AND lesson planning in ORR or HHS programs.

Working Conditions/ Physical Effort

Work is performed mostly in an office setting. Some overnight travel, public speaking, evening and weekend work are requirements of the position. Regular computer works also required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, reach, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch, talk and hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
